I am an experienced pilot, why am I coming to La Cerdanya…
At the eastern end of the valley, which is in France, is the impressive Vauban fortress on Mont Louis, at 3,500ft. The valley turns west for 60 km at 1,000 feet at La Seu d’Urgell in Spain, flanked on both sides by mountains that exceed 9,000 feet. With protection from the moist air coming from the north and west, the valley has a microclimate that offers excellent conditions for high flight. If the winds are light, the thermal energy and convergences can be spectacular, and if the wind is significant from almost any direction, the wave lift can be used for very fast and exciting racing.
The airfield at La Cerdanya Airport, home of L’Aeroclub de Barcelona, has first-class facilities and is ideally located near the border of France and Spain. In good conditions it is possible to race through the Pyrenean mountains to the west of the valley, almost as far as Pamplona.
